Common British Citizenship Routes
You may be able to apply for British citizenship, or already be a British citizen, if one of the following applies to you:
- You were born in the UK and one of your parents was British or settled in the UK at the time of your birth.
- You were born in the UK and later became entitled to register as British.
- You were adopted by a British citizen.
- You are married to, or in a civil partnership with, a British citizen.
- You have lived in the UK for the required period and meet the naturalisation requirements.
- You have Indefinite Leave to Remain, settled status, or another status that may lead to citizenship by naturalisation.
- You have a British parent, grandparent, or other family connection that may support a nationality claim.
Each case is different. Before you apply, it is important to check the correct route, the evidence required, and whether any issues may affect your application such as the Good Character requirements.
Special Cases: You May Already Be a Citizen and Not Know…
Some people are already British citizens but do not realise it, or need help to prove their status. This often happens because of changes in the law, historical unfairness, or decisions made by public bodies. In certain cases, British citizenship can be recognised where there has been:
- past discrimination or historical legislative unfairness
- an error or omission by a public authority
- exceptional circumstances
- recent changes in nationality law
For example, before 2006, a child born to a British father could only automatically become a British citizen if the parents were married. Many people affected by this rule may now, since 2006, be entitled to British citizenship under updated British Nationality law.

British Citizenship by Naturalisation
Naturalisation is the common route for adults who have lived in the UK, hold the right immigration status, and want to become British citizens.
You will usually need to show that you meet the residence requirements, have the right immigration status, are of good character, meet the English language requirement, and have passed the Life in the UK test unless you are exempt (we can advise if you can be exempt).
If you are married to, or in a civil partnership with, a British citizen, reduced residence rules may apply. We can check the correct rules before you apply.

Commonwealth Citizens – The Windrush Scheme
The Windrush Scheme helps people who arrived in the UK many years ago, or whose family members did, but who do not have clear proof of their immigration status.
Without the right documentation, people have had problems proving their right to work, rent a home, access benefits, use services, or confirm their right to live in the UK.
Ankunda Joel (AJ) Matsiko has been working with Windrush matters since the outset of the Windrush Scandal in early March 2018. This experience means we understand the importance of clear evidence, careful case preparation, and sensitive support for people and families affected by Windrush issues.
The Windrush Scheme does not cover applications for a British passport. British citizens must still pay for a passport. This means that even if a person receives British citizenship or confirmation of status under the Windrush Scheme, they may still need to pay the separate passport fee if they want a British passport.

British Citizenship by Registration
Registration is often used for children and for some adults with a specific connection to the UK or a British nationality status. Some people have a right to register, others must ask the Home Office for discretion.
We can help with child registration applications, applications based on birth in the UK, applications linked to a parent’s status, and more complex nationality cases.
Some examples of who might be eligible for registration include:
- Those born in the UK who didn’t automatically become British citizens and have lived in the UK for the first ten years of their life.
- Individuals where previous nationality laws did not automatically grant British citizenship, such as those born to unmarried British fathers or British mothers before certain dates.
- British Overseas Territories citizens, British nationals (overseas), British overseas citizens, British subjects, and British protected persons in specific circumstances, such as based on UK residence or having no other citizenship.
- Individuals applying under special circumstances related to historical unfairness or exceptional situations.
- Stateless persons.
- Those wishing to resume British citizenship after previously renouncing it.
Recent changes in the law mean there are now more ways to qualify for British citizenship if you can prove you, or a family member, were:
- Affected by historical unfairness in the law
- A child born outside the UK before 1983 to a British mother
- An act or omission of a public authority
- Other exceptional circumstances or discrimination

Types of British Nationality
There are six main types of British nationality:
- British citizen
- British overseas territories citizen
- British overseas citizen
- British subject
- British national (overseas)
- British protected person
Not every type of British nationality gives the same rights. British citizenship is usually the status that gives a person the right to live and work in the UK without immigration restrictions and to apply for a British passport.
British Citizenship Certificate and Replacement Certificates
If your citizenship application is successful, you will receive a certificate of registration or naturalisation. This certificate is important. Keep it safe because replacement certificates can be expensive and may take time.
- You may need your certificate when applying for a British passport.
- You may need it to prove your right to live and work in the UK.
- You may need it when dealing with banks, employers, education providers, or public bodies.
If you have lost your certificate, you can apply for a replacement through the relevant UK government service.
Current British Citizenship and Passport Application Costs
Government fees change regularly. The figures below are up-to-date as of 8th April 2026.
